DOWNTOWN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL CONSORTIUM (DISC): A COALITION OF FAMOUS PROGRESSIVE PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN LOWER MANHATTAN

The Downtown Independent School Consortium (DISC) is a select group of six famous private schools all located in Downtown New York City. Through DISC, the schools collaborate and compete both academically and athletically. The six member schools are highly-selective, amongst the best-known schools in the city and, indeed, the country. Each is particularly well-known for its progressive ethos and for advancements in educational research and pedagogical development.

ABOUT

The group are often known as “The DISC Schools” in reference to their formal cooperation through the consortium and their similar ideologies and contribution to the educational sector. All of the schools perform extremely well academically, ranking amongst the very top nationally and, as such, operate very competitive admissions procedures. The Downtown Independent School Consortium members are also all members of the Guild of Independent Schools of New York City, associated with New York Interschool and are recognised by the Parents League.

The six member schools convene a variety of faculty conferences and training courses under the DISC banner in addition to regular interscholastic sporting competitions between themselves. The DISC schools also work together to advance progressive causes in education, particularly with respect to admissions diversity and transparency. Establishing best-practice approaches, the DISC schools often play a key role in influencing similar agenda items within other consortia and industry associations of which they are members.
