PASADENA AREA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (PAIS): THE GREAT PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE WESTERN LOS ANGELES NEIGHBOURHOODS

PASADENA AREA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS: THE GREAT PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN THE WESTERN LOS ANGELES NEIGHBOURHOODS

The Pasadena Area Independent Schools consortium (PAIS) brings together a selection of the best-known and highest-rated independent schools in and around the city of Pasadena, including neighbourhoods such as La Cañada Flintridge and Altadena. Its member schools comprise many of the most celebrated and prestigious schools in Los Angeles County with a range of educational pedagogies and philosophies being delivered to all ages from K-12.

ABOUT

Pasadena is a city with a grand history having first achieved fame as a popular destination resort town for wealthy Americans travelling from across the country to winter in the leafy, warmer climes of the San Gabriel valley. Whilst civilisations have inhabited the region for thousands of years, it was the advent of the railway that heralded Pasadena’s boom years with various grand hotels being opened and many mansions being built as second homes for affluent snowbirds.

In the early Hollywood era, many prolific celebrities and socialites called Pasadena home, and the city was renowned as an enclave for the rich and famous. With the exploding population of Southern California (“SoCal”) in the past century, Pasadena has become more suburban in its nature, becoming a preferred neighbourhood for many Angelenos seeking an easier pace of life than that offered in many other Los Angeles suburbs. In more recent years, Pasadena has also become a significant educational hub that includes many of SoCal’s best schools, universities and research institutions, including the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The city is also host to the annual Rose Bowl Game, one of, if not the, pre-eminent college football showcase matches.

Many of the schools in the region are independent schools. A select few of them have come together to form the Pasadena Area Independent Schools consortium. Some of the members are headquartered outside of the region but operate multiple campuses which include Pasadena area sites.

For the most part, the consortium combines admissions, marketing and promoting efforts. The various member schools operate a common admissions calendar, combined admissions fairs and marketing events and, above all, a common admissions assessment approach. The association acts as a starting point for prospective admissions in the area and provides marketing support to the consortium member schools. The consortium also acts to promote the diversity in offering amongst its member schools and to ensure that their respective student bodies and faculties reflect the diversity of the communities in which they operate. In this respect, the consortium works closely with diversity and inclusiveness schools’ associations such as the Southern California People of Color in Independent Schools (SOCAL POCIS) association, the A Better Chance (ABC) foundation and the Independent School Alliance for Minority Affairs (The Alliance / ISA / ISAMA). These organisations work with faculty or with prospective students from minority backgrounds to ensure a pathway to independent schools and a college-preparatory education regardless of background or financial circumstances.

Applicants to PAIS member schools may do using the common admissions template and process developed by the consortium. Assessment dates, screening dates, interviews and decision deadlines are all harmonised too to simplify the process. The consortium also produces easy to use navigational tools and options matrices to better demonstrate the differences between the schools and to make the admissions pathway as transparent as possible. Ultimately, this common approach ensures that families are able to find the most appropriate school for their children and can manage multiple applications without having wildly differing processes and without the need to demonstrate access to funding in accordance with differing criteria.

The consortium has overseen admissions fairs on behalf of its member schools for more than a decade, often inviting other independent schools from the area that are not members of PAIS. Its network of associates and members extends to some thirty local private schools.

The Pasadena Area Independent Schools consortium also facilitates training and development opportunities for staff within the respective member schools and supports the sharing of best practice and common policy approaches.

The Pasadena Area Independent Schools consortium operates alongside similar, local independent schools’ consortia such as the Los Angeles Independent Schools (LAIS), the Independent Schools of the San Francisco Bay Area (ISSFBA) and the San Diego Consortium of Independent and Private Schools (SDCIS). These associations and consortiums work to represent their members’ interests and to advance admissions standards in those schools and form part of a wider national network of independent schools’ representative groups.

The member schools include a broad variety of schools, including a multitude of faith schools from Islamic to Christian schools subscribing to the Catholic or Anglican ethos. Some of the schools specialise in early years and elementary education whilst others focus on college-preparatory high schooling, an international programme or offer an all-through educational pathway. Amongst the member schools are also some single-sex schools and others that focus on a co-educational, progressive pedagogy. All the member schools are fully accredited and in good standing with the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Many are also affiliated with the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). Indeed, the Pasadena Area Independent Schools consortium is a member of both CAIS and NAIS. PAIS member schools are also represented in various national and international peer school associations, such as the G20 Schools association, The Heads’ Network, the Center for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE), the Elementary School Heads’ Association (ESHA), the Folio Collaborative, the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools (ICGS), the Global Education Benchmark Group (GEBG), Independent School Data Exchange (INDEX), the Independent Schools Experiential Education Network (ISEEN), the Global Online Academy, the Heads and Principals Association, the National Network of Schools in Partnership (NNSP) and the National Capstone Consortium.

Unlike similar associations in other parts of the country, the PAIS consortium does not operate an athletic conference or support sports competition between the member schools. Instead, the various member schools participate in a number of other high school athletic conferences across the region.

To find out more about the Pasadena Area Independent Schools you can get in touch with the consortium using the contact details set out below or speak with your preferred member school as listed here.

Prospective applicants are always keen to hear from alumni of these schools and any insights which you might be able to share which demonstrate why any of the respective schools might be the right choice for them. We welcome any thoughts or comments that you would like to share that help our readers to form a greater picture of the schools in question.
