SIX SCHOOLS LEAGUE (SSL): GOVERNING SPORTS COMPETITIONS BETWEEN AMERICA’S GREATEST SCHOOLS

The Six Schools League (SSL) is a high school sports conference comprised of the leading private preparatory schools in the northeast United States, all of which are of national and international fame. The conference formalises existing rivalries between the top-tier boarding schools in the region whilst allowing for the development of common approaches to sports governance and athletic admissions to their schools.

ABOUT

Founded in 2015 as the Five Schools League a select group of the leading college-preparatory schools whom consider one another to be peers, the league initially included: Choate; Andover; Deerfield; Exeter; and Northfield Mount Hermon. Many of the founding members share long-standing great rivalries in athletic and academic competition. These schools had been in discussion about establishing such a league since 1998.

The league, sanctioned by NEPSAC, maintains a core ethos that focuses on moderating high school athletics such that athletics programmes are designed to foster competition throughout the school year and to encourage wider participation in a wide variety of varsity programmes. In essence, the foundation of the league was to temper supercharged athletics programmes that focused on knock-out/play-off games and/or single great rivalries in any one sport at the expense of others.

Furthermore, the member schools athletics directors must adhere to strict policies prohibiting efforts to recruit athletes to their programmes and ensuring that rigorous academic standards are met.

Other schools, considered to be peers by the existing membership, may apply to join the league subject to agreeing to abide by the same standards as set out above. In this respect, St. Paul’s School joined from the Independent School League in 2017 and the Five Schools League became the Six Schools League.
