The International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) is a global association of leading boys’ schools, predominantly in the independent sector. The school members collaborate extensively on research, policy development and policy advocacy to develop common, advanced teaching techniques to get the most out of boys education and to ensure that their graduates are capable, great young male leaders.
The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) is the association body that oversees inter-varsity sports competitions between an extremely select group of highly prestigious private liberal arts colleges in the Northeast United States. The conference is often, endearingly, referred to as the little Ivy League – a reference to the more famous athletics league comprised of some of the top-tier research universities in the United States with similar admissions policies.
The Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) is the premier trade association representing the interests of independent and private schools across Canada. CAIS facilitates knowledge-sharing and policy development between members and as an accreditation body maintaining standards in the fee-paying school sector.
Canada’s education system is famous for being one of the best in the world, offering rigorous and vigorous schooling from early years through to degree level. Such degrees are conferred by a multitude of quality colleges and universities but the best known and, arguably, the most prestigious are the Old Four research universities that include: McGill University; Queen’s University; University of Toronto; and Western University.

The Ivy League is a sports conference for a select group of Universities and Colleges from the Northeastern United States that share a reputation for excellence and prestige. Despite the group’s founding as a sports conference, the constituent members work closely together on other aspects of university life and the conference’s name now transcends it’s sports conference heritage to the extent that “Ivy League” has become a byword for the elite tier of universities and colleges in the United States and, indeed, internationally.
The Elite Eight is a an informal moniker applied to a group of highly-selective boarding schools in the United States that are considered to be the most exclusive schools in the country. Whilst many of the schools are known to consider one another as equals and often collaborate with one another with respect to common admissions practices or their participation in formal associations (such as the Eight Schools Association – with which the term is sometimes erroneously associated, or the Ten Schools Admission Organization), the Elite Eight is not an official body. Nonetheless, it is a common term used by prospective pupils and admissions agents assisting families with attaining places to such elite prep schools.

The Select 16 is an informal term applied to sixteen of the most prestigious boarding schools in the United States. The term was first coined in 1986 by authors Peter W. Cookson, Jr. and Caroline Hodges Persell in their book ‘Preparing for Power: America’s Elite Boarding Schools’. The term was devised to illustrate the select group of schools that had presented the highest number of students for matriculation into the Ivy League colleges and other elite institutions across America. The schools in the Select 16 have long-been considered amongst the most selective and exclusive boarding schools in the United States with famous alumni and large endowments.

Rugby School is famous as the homeplace of two great institutions: the sport of rugby union; and the establishment of what has come to be regarded as the English public school tradition. The school has taken the latter a step further when, in the 1960s, the then Headmaster invited a number of prestigious boarding schools to form an informal grouping. Substantial changes to the education system were underfoot at the time of the group’s founding including the phasing out of grammar schools and the creation of a comprehensive State education system and many independent schools were greatly concerned about the impact this might have on their viability and standing.
