Boasting incredible campuses that would rival most universities, professional-grade sports facilities, cutting-edge laboratories and innovative curriculums, a new wave of schools is rapidly being established across the world. With their establishment comes a new standard in international schooling. Yet, despite their modern buildings and state-of-the-art amenities, many of these schools claim a proud and illustrious history and a legacy of prestige and exclusivity that, in some cases, is many centuries old. These schools are part of an emergent trend in the education sector that has seen many of the oldest and most-celebrated independent schools (and some non-independent schools) opening branches or franchises overseas.
In the hyper competitive world of independent schools’, the establishment of overseas schools has become the new “Arms Race” with schools scrambling to find partners to launch in new markets before their competitors. Many schools who have pursued this growth strategy have cited surging demand in emerging markets, particularly the BRICs countries like India and China, but also in more established economies like Singapore and Hong Kong. Other key growth markets include Thailand, Malaysia and the UAE. More recently, Japan, Egypt, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, and Saudi Arabia have become the latest battlegrounds. Other schools have also begun to explore bringing their particular brand and ethos to well-established and, perhaps, saturated markets, like the United States and Canada, with North American schools looking at European markets with a keen eye towards exporting their own approach.

AMERICAN SCHOOLS
ADMIRAL FARRAGUT ACADEMY GLOBAL CAMPUS
Admiral Farragut Academy is a Floridian institution, having operated as an elite, boarding, college-preparatory school in St. Petersburg since 1945. Generations of successful young men and women have graduated from this renowned school which maintains a proud history as a military academy with a particular focus on preparing young adults for service in the naval and maritime services.
The school has a well-established pedigree and a track record of experience in managing multiple sites under a single brand and holistic mission. In fact, the famous Florida site is the school’s second branch, the first being founded in Pine Beach, New Jersey in 1933. The New Jersey branch closed in 1994 leaving it’s satellite branch in St. Petersburg as the sole representative of the school’s great brand. That is until Farragut embarked on its highly ambitious “Global Campus” project. The prestigious school opened the first branch of its global campus network in Tianjin in 2013 alongside partner school Tianjin Yaohua High School. The school initially operated as a school within a school from Yaohua’s campus before relocating in 2016 to the site of former American military barracks in the city. An additional Chinese school was established in Dongguan in 2019. Additionally, Farragut entered into a partnership with the Shanghai New Epoch Bilingual School. Admiral Farragut Academy has a relationship with Limai Chinese American International School in Beijing too.
The Admiral Farragut Academy Global Campus network operates to provide an American-style, English-language education to international pupils in-country. Pupils may study an American college-preparatory curriculum with a view to transferring to the Floridian campus or entering an American university. Additionally, the network facilitates staff and pupil exchange programmes and transfers. In recent years, Admiral Farragut Academy has taken a less direct role in the administration of its satellite schools, instead allowing their partners to act as primary operators, in part due to significant reforms to Chinese education and the role of foreign school enterprises.

AVENUES: THE WORLD SCHOOL
Avenues was founded in New York City in 2012 carrying the moniker: “The World School” by a select group of renowned educators and innovators, which included Benno Schmidt, Jr., President of Yale University and Chris Whittle who would later establish his eponymous school (Whittle School & Studios). From the outset, the school would operate as a for-profit institution that would avail of every technology and innovative methodology at its disposal to become educational change-makers. The school’s very mission is to be at the vanguard of a paradigm shift in global education. The school aims to prepare pupils for the challenges of an increasingly globalised and technologically driven world in addition to meeting the fundamentals of a college-preparatory curriculum, based on a design by Phillips Exeter Academy, arguably the most prestigious school in the United States. The school takes great pride in the calibre of its academic staff, many of whom are recruited from universities and colleges.
As a globally focused school, Avenues has opened additional campuses in São Paulo, Brazil and Shenzhen, China in 2018. These schools offer an all-through, international education. Avenues opened another new campus in Silicon Valley in 2022 which would also be home to their online school offering. The Silicon Valley branch has since become Aeon School. Avenues is currently exploring establishing new campuses in Shanghai and Miami with further plans to open additional campuses across Asia, Europe and North America in the coming years. Avenues was taken over by the global education operator, Nord Anglia, in 2023 but remains an independent brand and structure. The Chinese enterprise (Avenues Shenzhen) was not included in this takeover and operates independently, albeit under the same branding.
Avenues operates a little differently to other international school networks or branched schools in that a pupil registered to one campus is automatically registered to all and is able to participate or attend either (with the exception of its separate Chinese enterprise due to local restrictions). Furthermore, pupils and faculty alike are strongly encouraged to move between the campuses in order to enhance their experience. As such, the school operates as one holistic entity.

THE BALDWIN SCHOOL
The Baldwin School was a prestigious, progressive independent high school founded in Manhattan in 1942. Named for its founder, Dr. Rollin Baldwin, the school became a much-loved institution, famed as a beacon of the progressive movement and considered to be amongst the finest schools in New York City. The school’s success saw the expansion of the Baldwin ethos across the city (under the guise of the Baldwin League of Independent Schools) and internationally, with a sister school established in Puerto Rico in 1968. Baldwin merged with the McBurney School in 1985 before the combined institution ultimately closed its doors forever in 1988.
Occupying a grand townhouse in New York’s tony Upper West Side, The Baldwin School quickly became a preferred choice amongst the Knickerbocker social elite. Dr. Baldwin’s pedagogy was well-received and highly appealing, so much so, in fact, that demand for places exceeded the capacity of the school. Thus, Baldwin attempted to further his movement by inviting other schools to learn from his approach whilst also benefitting from significant cost saving measures and synergies. He created the Independent School Council of New York City.
Baldwin would later acquire a number of other prestigious Manhattan schools which would operate under the Baldwin League of Independent Schools name, including Carnegie Hill School, Rhodes Preparatory School and Riverside School. As noted above, Baldwin, would also takeover the renowned McBurney School with which it would ultimately merge.
Inspired by the Baldwin method, a group of educators from the Universidad de Puerto Rico invited Dr. Baldwin to establish a sister school in Puerto Rico. The Baldwin School of Puerto Rico was founded in 1968 and remains the only school under the Baldwin banner in operation today.
