THE BISHOP’S SCHOOL
The Bishop’s School is a very highly-rated Episcopal day school in La Jolla in Southern California, serving pupils from across the north San Diego area. The school offers a rigorous and successful college-preparatory program for students in middle and high school grades 6 through 12. It’s oceanside location affords the school one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, designed in the Spanish Colonial vernacular typical of California. The Bishop’s School is revered as an academic, artistic and athletic powerhouse.
The Bishop’s School was established in 1909, initially as a boarding school for girls. It merged with a neighbouring boys’ school in 1971 (San Miguel School) and closed the boarding department in the early 1980s. Since then the school has been a fully co-educational day school in the Episcopal tradition. In recent years, the school has embarked on a programme of expansion, with 6th grade pupils being welcomed as of 2009.
The Bishop’s school is an independent school with fees on a par with other top-tier Californian private schools. Tuition fees support the school’s highly-acclaimed academics, complemented with various co-curricular initiatives such as theatre, choir, performing and visual arts, Model United Nations, Debate and a host of other clubs and societies. The school enjoys a strong sporting reputation, particularly for their championship winning water polo and football teams. Many celebrated athletes are counted amongst the school’s alumni.
The school is an accredited member of the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the Global Education Benchmark Group (GEBG), the Global Online Academy (GOA), the Headmasters’ Association (HMA), the Mid-South Independent School Business Officers Association (MISBO), the Heads’ Network, the Southern California People of Color in Independent Schools network (SOCAL POCIS) and the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES).
