BOSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL COLLABORATIVE (BISC): SHOWCASING THE BEST OF BOSTON’S PRIVATE SCHOOLS

The Boston Independent School Collaborative (BISC) is a group of 19 well-known, independent schools located in and around the city of Boston, Massachusetts. The schools share close relationships with one another and consider each other to be peers. Through the Boston Independent School Collaborative they cooperate on various initiatives, primarily focused on admissions.

ABOUT

Boston is a city famous as an educational hub with many of the nation’s leading colleges, universities and schools located within the Greater Boston region. Indeed, many are amongst the most famous institutions in the world (such as Harvard University of Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The educational ecosystem in “Beantown” includes many of the oldest and most revered schools in North America, with public schools like Boston Latin dating back to 1635 and private schools like Roxbury Latin dating back to 1645.

With such academic prowess and prestige, however, comes a fierce competition to be the best and to attract the best. The schools located within the Boston area work hard to ensure that they are regionally and gloablly competitive.

Through consortiums such as the Boston Independent School Collaborative, many of the top-tier schools combine resources and experience to develop a common approach to admissions and marketing efforts in order to elevate themselves above their peers.

BISC builds on existing relationships between the member schools, being established in 2021 (and sometimes referred to as the Greater Boston Independent School Collaborative). The organisation serves as a marketing and promotion group for its various member schools and for the region. BISC delivers on this mission through various events and admissions fairs to attract prospective pupils to their schools and to showcase the best Boston has to offer. Simultaneously, the group convenes regular workshops and training programmes to support management, faculty and admissions professionals, keeping them abreast of the latest in policy and procedure.

The group also combines their lobbying and advocacy efforts through the BISC initiative in order to provide a more effective and coherent voice for the sector when representing their interests to government, regulators, trade bodies and other stakeholders.

Membership of the Boston Independent School Collaborative (sometimes called the Greater Boston Independent School Collaborative) varies but has recently included those schools listed below. These include a mixture of traditional and progressive schools, some with a faith-based ethos and others having been pioneers in the Country Day School movement. All of the schools are accredited by New England Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and are members of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Association of Independent Schools of New England (AISNE). Furthermore, all of the member schools are recognised by the Parents Independent Network (PIN) and various other national and international organisations. Through the various member schools, BISC has education from pre-school to High School covered.
