THE BOARDING SCHOOL CONSORTIUM: A COLLECTION OF REMARKABLE BOARDING SCHOOLS ON THE EAST COAST
The Boarding School Consortium (BSC) is a select grouping of nationally-ranked, college-preparatory boarding schools located in the Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Its membership is composed of some of the most prestigious and schools in the country, some of whom are amongst the oldest in the nation too. These schools have come together to pool their expertise and resources to promote boarding schools in the region and to share best practice approaches to school admissions, management and pastoral care.
ABOUT
The consortium was founded in 2021 with thirteen schools invited to become members. The enrolment and admissions officers of twelve of those schools accepted membership and agreed to collaborate as The Boarding School Consortium, namely: Garrison Forest, George, Hun, Kiski, Linden Hall, Oldfields, Perkiomen, Saint James, Solebury, Storm King, Westtown and Wyoming Seminary. Oldfields is no longer a member of the BSC, having left in 2022. The organisation continues today with 11 of the original founding members still participating.
The Boarding School Consortium presents a single front for schools admissions, supporting prospective pupils and their families with finding a place at the best matching school for their needs, skills and aspirations. In addition, the secretariat of the BSC organises schools fairs and tours, visiting feeder schools in the region and consolidating meet and greets into single events (rather than the touring of campuses and attendance at interviews that was the traditional approach taken in the past). This has significantly sped up the admissions process and improved access to the schools, particularly for families that may not otherwise have the means to manage the logistics of visiting and applying to a multitude of schools. The BSC also organises training and networking events for admissions professionals and education consultants to better equip them in the provision of services to clients, including international customers.
The member schools are amongst some of the highest-regarded schools in the country, with many boasting glittering and distinguished alumni lists and a long track record of sending pupils up to the most-selective colleges and universities, including the Ivy League, NESCAC and their peer schools.
The consortium was formed, partially, in response to the efforts of other peer schools which have formed rival associations to boost their profiles and give their member schools a competitive advantage in attracting pupils. These include those famous organisations such as the Eight Schools Association (ESA), the Ten Schools Admission Organization (TSAO) and other lesser-known groups of top-tier prep schools including the Mid-Atlantic Boarding School Group (MABS) and the Great Boarding Schools (GBS) coalition. The founding of these groups, as well as the BSC, follows a growing trend in the sector which has seen a number of networks being established to make the case for boarding schools and to raise awareness of the variety of options available. Some are regionally focussed, such as Maine Boarding Schools (MBS), Midwest Boarding, the Texas Boarding Schools Association (TBSA), the Western Boarding Schools Association (WBSA), and the Western Connecticut Boarding Schools Association (WCBS). Others seek to promote a particular attribute common to their members, including the Catholic Boarding Schools Association (CBSA), the Junior Boarding School Association (JBSA) or the Small Boarding School Association (SBSA). These bodies tend to focus on matters of enrolment and marketing and their member schools operate and co-operate within the framework of The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), by whom they are inspected and accredited.
The Boarding School Consortium member institutions are all accredited independent schools at both state, regional and national level. All are members of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).
If you would like to find out more about the BSC or details of upcoming events, you can get in touch using the contact details below. Alternatively, you might prefer to speak with one of the member schools as listed here.
We are always keen to hear from past pupils who have attended a Boarding School Consortium member institution, or who have worked at one. Please do let us know about your experiences in the comments below, especially any useful insights or thoughts that might help future pupils in making the decision about which is the right school for them and ensures that their application stands out.
