The Tilst campus of the famous Aarhus Gymnasium (previously known as Langkær Gymnasium & HF) is regarded as one of Denmark’s, indeed Europe’s, best state schools. Aarhus Gymnasium, Tilst, offers a rigorous education to only the most highly capable pupils in the classic gymnasium tradition and has done since its foundation in 1968.
The school merged with the neighbouring Aarhus Tech (located in central Aarhus) in 2018 dropping the Langkær name. As part of a larger family of schools, pupils are able to avail of a range of study options, from international courses to technical courses as well as the Danish high school curriculum. The upper secondary school (the gymnasium) offers STX, HTX and HF courses (essentially technical or college-preparatory courses) to students who have met the nationally required criteria (completion of 10th grade) and subject to sufficient grade performance in prescribed school exams at lower Folkeskole levels.
The school’s suburban campus accommodates a day school that admits boys and girls from the ages of 10 – 18, regardless of faith or ethos. Instruction is delivered bi-lingually with an internationalist outlook. The school’s international perspective is reflected in its global citizenship focus and, as such, the school has established a worldwide reputation and sits alongside many famous peers as members of the prestigious Global Alliance of Leading-Edge Schools group (and the affiliated Water is Life Association initiative), in addition to its membership of Globale Gymnasier – a network of Danish international schools.
In keeping with this international perspective, pupils may avail of the International Baccalaureate curriculum whilst attending the gymnasium.
The school is supported by the state but may charge some fees.
