BROWN
Brown was founded in 1764 as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (more commonly known as Rhode Island College) in Providence, Rhode Island. A private, research university, it is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States and a distinguished member of the Ivy League. It was founded, at the outset, as a university unlike many of their peer schools who were initially preparatory schools which became colleges. Brown its charter to Ezra Stiles who would go on to become one of Yale’s most famous Presidents and to the Baptist community of Rhode Island who sought an institution at which its members could study and practice their faith free from persecution. Whilst Brown was established explicitly as a school which would admit students regardless of their religious background (which at the time was a rather a reference to whichever Protestant church a student may hail from), the Baptists of the Rhode Island were concerned that they did not have a tertiary level institution of their own, or at the very least, one which would not discriminate against admitting them. Thus, Brown had a reputation as being a Baptist school although the school is very much non-sectarian today. The university was initially based in Warren, a town south of Providence, before Moses Brown donated some of his family’s lands to the college to support its relocation in 1770. It is for him and his family that the college was renamed in 1804 following a further donation to support the school’s endowment.
The Gilded Age brought great prosperity to Providence and nearby Newport with many of the nation’s most famous industrialist families establishing themselves in the area. Brown University would benefit too from this boom, with many illustrious graduates whose family names are well known across America, a combination of established old money names and new money wealth. Founded as a men’s college, Brown opened its own constituent women’s college, Pembroke College, in 1891. The college merged into the co-educational Brown University in 1971.

Brown is famed for its commitment to intellectual freedom, embodied in its Open Curriculum, which allows Brunonian students to be the architects of their own education by eschewing traditional core requirements. This spirit of “free inquiry” has cultivated a culture that is uniquely collaborative rather than competitive, attracting independent thinkers who prioritise social impact and interdisciplinary exploration. Students may also cross-register with the neighbouring Rhode Island School of Design.
As one of the most selective universities in the world, Brown’s acceptance rate frequently hovers around 5%. It is globally recognized not just for academic rigor, but for producing 29 Pulitzer Prize winners, 12 Nobel laureates, and numerous Rhodes Scholars. It’s alumni also includes notable royals and aristocrats from across the world, Secretaries of State and leaders of industry. The school’s varsity athletic teams are known as the Brown bears and has fielded noteworthy players including John Heisman (the namesake of the Heisman Trophy) and Fritz Pollard, who led Brown to the first-ever Rose Bowl in 1916 and became one of the first African American players and coaches in the NFL.
