Arguably vying for the title of America’s most famous school against its namesake and rival, Phillips Exeter Academy, Andover, as the school is often called, is one of the great American academies. Founded in the late 18th century, embracing American enlightenment principles, Andover has come to characterise the American approach to rationalism and scientific thinking. The school is the oldest continuously in existence of the American academy model and was and still is at the vanguard of the movement. The school has an enviable alumni list with a reputation for excellence as a university and college-preparatory school, traditionally associated with Yale University but presenting candidates for matriculation at all Ivy League institutions and the other great universities of the United States. Phillips Andover Academy is extremely selective and is a member of a number of select groups and associations including the G30 group of schools. The school has been fully co-educational since it merged with The Abbott Academy in 1973.
