BI-COLLEGE CONSORTIUM (BI-CO): A SIBLING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO OF AMERICA’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS, SELECTIVE LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES

The Bi-College Consortium is a formal relationship between Haverford College and Bryn Mawr College that builds upon and cements more than one hundred years of cooperation and collaboration between the two institutions. The two selective liberal arts colleges have a common foundation and an intertwined history which has seen various degrees of coordination between the two, especially when both operated as single-sex institutions (Bryn Mawr remains so). Both colleges have developed reputations as prestigious, highly selective, and academic rigorous institutions and have long-been associated with the upper classes of American society, despite their progressive Quaker ethos, albeit they are amongst the most socially inclusive third-level schools in the United States today.

The Oberlin Group is a consortium of leading liberal arts colleges from across the United States (more explicitly, the libraries of those colleges). The group was formalised in 1984 at an inaugural conference organised by the then President of Oberlin College. Bringing together an invited group of leaders of top-tier private colleges, the group share a common interest in raising the profile of their sector and in developing a programme of modernisation of library administration, information technology, knowledge management, liberal arts research and the publication of college materials and academic material. Due to the highly-selective and exclusive colleges that comprise the group, membership is seen as being reserved to only the best of America’s private liberal arts colleges that are considered to be peers of one another.

SEVEN SISTERS: THE ELITE, HISTORIC WOMEN’S COLLEGES THAT PARTNER THE IVY LEAGUE

The Seven Sisters consortium is a collection of prestigious, highly selective liberal arts colleges from across the north-eastern United States that currently or historically have been exclusive to female students only. The seven member colleges came together in 1926 to begin an informal association that would meet annually thereafter. The association is comprised of those seven colleges that long considered themselves to be peer sister schools. These schools have also enjoyed a long, close relationship with Ivy League universities that, in the past, had been open only to male students. As s,uch, the Seven Sisters are often perceived to be the sister schools to those Ivy League universities.
