Ghana, like many of its neighbours, has an education sector heavily dominated by private and independent schools. Indeed, today there are at least 21,000 private schools across the country – the majority offering “basic” level education (primary and junior high school) with a small number offering senior high school (non-compulsory). Whilst these schools are all fee-paying, many are heavily subsidised by faith-based missions or charge minimal fees to ensure access to struggling families. Many offer a boarding option and most offer some form of international education (typically British). With increasing state intervention over recent years, many of Ghana’s private schools have chosen to form collective associations in order to defend their positions and to ensure a representative voice in discussions with government. The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) is one of the largest of these organisations and is considered to be one of the primary associations recognised by the Ghanaian government (meaning a seat at the table in discussions affecting the sector).

Ghana has a substantial private education sector, accounting for the vast majority of education providers in the country. The Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) estimates that there are more than 22,000 private schools offering “basic” education (primary and junior high school level) and a further 654 private senior high schools in Ghana. Over recent years many of these schools have coalesced around a number of trade associations and lobbying groups convened to represent the private school sector.

The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) is one of the larger trade bodies representing the interests of private school owners in Ghana – a country wherein most pupils attend some form of private school, but the majority of those schools receive limited support from the state.
Ghana’s Private Education Coalition (also known as the Private Education Coalition Committee and referred to by the acronyms PEC / PECC) is a collective lobby group comprised of the major private schools associations and representing hundreds of private schools in the country. It was formed in 2020 to give a united voice to the sector in representations to government and to media at a time of pending turmoil for private schools in a country where they account for the majority of educational institutions.

The Association of International Certification Schools Ghana (ASICS) is voluntary membership organisation representing over 40 schools that offer an internationally accredited curriculum. Typically, these schools offer international GCSE and A-Level programs, approved by Cambridge International or recognised by the British Council.
The Association of Private School Owners Ghana (APSOG) is one of several membership bodies established to protect and advance the interests of the private educational sector in Ghana, a country where private schools make up a significant majority of educational providers.
