THE CLARENDON SCHOOLS: THE ORIGINAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS AS DEFINED BY THE CLARENDON COMMISSION (AKA THE GREAT NINE)

In 1861, a Royal Commission, under the chairmanship of the 4th Earl of Clarendon, was established and tasked with investigating the governance and finance of Britain’s public schools (effectively private schools) and sought to define and stipulate what constitutes a public school and how such schools are managed, specifically, with respect to their endowments and how those endowments were disbursed. Ultimately, and controversially, the Commission’s report would ring-fence a select group of elite schools (the Great Nine / Clarendon Schools) which would be subject to the provisions of the Public Schools Act 1868 and which, forever thereafter, would enjoy a higher degree of status and reputation than their peers.

Rugby School is famous as the homeplace of two great institutions: the sport of rugby union; and the establishment of what has come to be regarded as the English public school tradition. The school has taken the latter a step further when, in the 1960s, the then Headmaster invited a number of prestigious boarding schools to form an informal grouping. Substantial changes to the education system were underfoot at the time of the group’s founding including the phasing out of grammar schools and the creation of a comprehensive State education system and many independent schools were greatly concerned about the impact this might have on their viability and standing.

ETON GROUP: AN ASSOCIATION OF LEADING BRITISH INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS

The Eton Group is a select grouping of leading Public Schools (independent private schools) in England, assembled by Eton College. Its membership is comprised of those schools considered to be peers of Eton College and that have shared concerns regarding management and administration. The informal grouping was established as an alternative to the older Rugby Group of boarding schools bringing together a mixture of day and boarding institutions from the South of England. Sporadic meetings are convened amongst the schools’ Headteachers and/or bursars.
