Darrow School is a proud boarding school in Lebanon, upstate New York. The school offers a rigorous college-preparatory programme for high school age pupils in grades 9-12 as well as a postgraduate year programme. The school was founded in 1932 as a boys’ school in the Shaker tradition. Lebanon has a well-established Shaker community, and the school was designed to accommodate young men from this community and from other Shaker families across the Northeast. It has since become a co-educational school and invites applications from all faiths and none.
The school welcomes international pupils and has a well-established international programme. It was a former international pupil at the school who set about establishing Darrow’s sister school in his native Beijing, China in 2016,. Pei Jing graduated from the Darrow School in 2011 and identified an opportunity to bring the school’s unique ethos and approach to the Chinese market. JPED Academy took in its first pupils when it opened in 2017, embracing the best of the Darrow philosophy and combining it with various innovations and curricula appropriate to Chinese pupils. Both schools accommodate American and international pupils seeking to matriculate to international, particularly North American, universities and colleges.
The two schools share a formal sister school relationship with many exchanges of students and faculty alike. The schools are separately operated and are, in effect, independent of one another with JPED Academy having been founded in homage to the New York school rather than as a satellite campus. However, as the school’s do currently share a formal affiliation, it might be considered alongside other schools that have expanded internationally.
As JPED Academy does not offer boarding options, Darrow also benefits from a local presence promoting the school as an option for families looking at boarding schools in North America. In a competitive market which has seen several traditional boarding schools in North America struggling to attract international pupils amidst declining domestic demand, such endeavours can be a boon to a school’s finances and longevity.
