THE SOCIETY OF HEADS
The Society of Heads (SoH) is a formal membership body comprised of the members of selective independent schools in the UK and overseas. They represent a number of leading private schools, including secondary schools, preparatory schools and specialist schools such as performing arts and military academies. The society was formerly The Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses of Independent Schools abbreviated as SHHIS or SHMIS and the society is still commonly known by these abbreviations today.
ABOUT
The association was formed in 1961 to give a voice to the independent schools sector, particularly those schools that did not meet the definition of a traditional English public school and which were not members of other headmasters’ associations. As such, The Society of Heads has typically been the membership body for heads of faith schools, music and arts schools, sixth form colleges and other private schools.
The organisation acts as a think tank and lobby group for its members and the wider independent schools sector. In particular it seeks to ensure a voice for non-traditional, faith-based and alternative independent schools that were typically excluded from much of the public discourse about the independent school sector and it’s relationship with the State over a century of changing education policy. The SoH works closely with other leading schools and heads’ associations in these endeavours. The society also acts as a standards body for its members and regularly coordinates training courses and conferences to advance standards and developments in its member schools.
The society is a constituent organisation of the Independent Schools Council, albeit a comparatively small member. Its’ member schools are also members of that organisation and are subject to inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Such schools are often referred to as “Association Schools” (i.e. that they are members of an approved association that is a constituent of the ISC). Many of its member school heads are also members of other recognised formal associations such as The Heads’ Conference (HMC) or the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA). They are considered to be dual members of the society.
As membership is invested in the headteacher, membership may vary and you should check with the school or with The Society of Heads for the latest membership information.
