ABOUT
Bancroft School was founded in 1900 by parents seeking to establish a quality all-through day school for pupils in Worcester, Massachusetts’ second biggest city. The school was named after George Bancroft, a Worcester native who had a decorated career in the navy and in US politics rising to serve as the Secretary of the Navy and as the American ambassador to Germany. Bancroft himself was a keen proponent of a progressive, modern science-led approach of German schools he had visited during his time as a diplomat and sought to establish a similar model of school in his home country to prepare the children of elite families for greatness as the future leaders of the United States.
ABOUT
Bancroft School was opened with the express intent of educating children of all ages and at all stages within the American education system (i.e. K – 1). Unusually for a school targeting the offspring of wealthy and esteemed American dynastic families, Bancroft was to be co-educational and a day school from the outset. The school borrowed heavily from the principles of the short-lived Round Hill School which had been founded by George Bancroft for whom the school is named.
Bancroft School is a small school which seeks to empower pupils with tailored approaches to their education engaging the school’s own proprietary approaches.
The school was considered to be extremely progressive relative to the English public school model that had been employed by rival schools opened in the later part of the 1800s and into the 1900s.
Bancroft offers pupils a range of extracurricular sports and activities typical of leading private schools in the New England region, with a particular strength in volleyball. The school also operates the Hope Graham Program – a school within the school which works with children with communicative issues.
