St. Andrew’s College Dublin is one of Ireland’s most celebrated schools, having stood as a pillar of Dublin’s Presbyterian community since it’s foundation in 1894. Today, St. Andrew’s is an open and globally-minded school, welcoming pupils of all faiths or those of none at all. It has garnered a particular renowned for it’s international ethos and has long been a favoured school of the ex-patriate community in Dublin. That reputation has been bolstered in recent years by the school’s adoption of the International Baccalaureate and its Advanced Placement programmes allowing pupils to matriculate at colleges and universities in the United States and overseas.
ABOUT
St. Andrew’s College traces its history back to 1894 when it was founded to cater for Dublin’s wealthy Presbyterian community, often overlooked by the Anglican Protestant Ascendancy that had established high Church schools for it’s own communities (albeit many preferred to send their children to attend English boarding schools) and by the spate of Catholic schools established in the 19th Century to cater towards the emergent Catholic middle and upper middle classes as well as what was left of the Irish nobility.
As such, St. Andrew’s opened it’s doors in Dublin’s city-centre at a prestigious address on St. Stephen’s Green. The school served the sons of the Presbyterian professional classes of the city. Since then, the school has grown significantly, expanding to welcome girls in the early 1970s and moving to a purpose -built campus in Blackrock which it still occupies today. The schools strives towards a broad admissions policy but, due to the unique way in which Protestant schools in Ireland are funded, still reserves preference for pupils affiliated with a Protestant denomination. The school has its own attached junior school which acts as a preparatory school for the senior school.
The school offers a broad range of sports and co-curricular options to complement the rigorous college-preparatory academic programme. It has developed a particular prowess as a rugby powerhouse over the years, earning a spot in Dublin’s so-called Super Seven – a collection of elite private schools that have excelled in the sport. With the school seeking to differentiate itself from its peers, it has embraced a diverse global citizenship agenda, including a Model United Nations and Model European Parliament programme.
