ALEXANDRA COLLEGE DUBLIN

Alexandra College, often shortened to Alex’s or Alex, is one of Ireland’s leading, girls-only boarding schools. Founded in 1866 as a third-level women’s college and a separate college-preparatory feeder school, Alex’s was co-located with University College Dublin at Earlsfort Terrace before both institutions separately relocated to the Milltown area in South Dublin. Today, Alexandra College is an all-through school preparing girls for entrance into Ireland’s leading universities.

ABOUT

The school was founded by renowned progressive Quaker, Ann Jellicoe, who believed strongly in opening education up to women. The creation of a women’s college saw the very first women awarded degrees in Ireland studying at Alex’s. The school is fiercely proud of its history and has maintained some of its original Quaker ethos, albeit that the school is now firmly a Church of Ireland school.

The school is named in honour of their patron, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, with the school colours of red and white representing the colours of the Danish flag. The school has attracted the daughters of many of Ireland’s famous families and welcomes applications from all over the world and of all faiths. Alex’s boasts excellent exam results with many students scoring over 500 points in the Leaving Certificate. The school is recognised nationally as a hockey powerhouse.

Pupils may enter the attached pre-school or junior school (primary level) which both provide instruction in the Froebelian pedagogy. Students may board from the age of 10.
