The oldest “Grinds School” in Cork, Bruce College has been offering extra tuition to Junior and Leaving Certificate students since 1989. The school also has a full-time Leaving senior school in which pupils may enroll to undertake the Leaving Certificate (or to repeat as the case may be). Bruce College is akin to the private Sixth Form colleges of the United Kingdom, alongside contemporaries: The Institute of Education; Yeats College; Hewitt College; and Ashfield College.

Pupils may attend private tutorial lessons outside of school hours where they are seeking extra support and guidance before they take school examinations. Such lessons are commonly referred to in Ireland as “grinds: and are a popular option for parents seeking to maximise their children’s results or to make up for a perceived shortfall in the quality of the education that the child’s school may otherwise deliver. Grinds Schools also provide an option for pupils seeking to retake or repeat exams where the traditional school system would not otherwise accommodate them.
The college’s success saw branches openined in Limerick, Dublin and Belfast but these have since closed down as the college focuses on growing the Cork school and expanding it’s full-time options.
Bruce College is purely focused on academic results and has a strong track record for excellent exam results.
