The Abbey is a highly-rated, girls only selective day school located in Reading, near London. The school offers education from nursery through to Sixth Form and is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference and the Girls’ Schools Association. It is a fee-paying private school (independent school).
ABOUT
The Abbey School was established in 1887 as the Reading High School before moving to its current site in 1905. Founded by the Church Schools Company (Now the United Church Schools Trust), the school was intended to provide an affordable Christian education to young women from across Berkshire and further field. The school continued to welcome girls from all over until boarding ceased in 1946. The school now operates as a day school attracting girls of all faiths and none from Reading and surrounding areas.
The Abbey is fee-paying but has a number of scholarship and bursary support schemes available. As an independent school, The Abbey is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (with the Nursery school being inspected by Ofsted). The junior school is a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) and the senior school is a member of both the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) and Girls’ School’s Association (GSA). In addition, the school’s governors are members of the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS) and the bursar is a member of the Independent Schools’ Bursars Association (ISBA).
The Abbey has a strong academic reputation and is selective in admissions with pupils expected to successfully undertake the school’s entrance examination before being offered a place in the senior school. Pupils may opt to follow the English curriculum or study towards the International Baccalaureate qualification.
In addition the school offers a wide range of sports and extracurricular activities to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to pursue and develop their passions. The Abbey offers a well-rounded education to prepare young women for university-entry and life thereafter.
