Groton is famed as one of America’s great examples of the British public school model, having been established as an alternative to the scientific academy model that had become popular, particularly in New England. Groton, an Episcopal school, espoused the muscular Christianity concept popular in England, that believed in the development of character and the creation of capable gentleman alongside the delivery of a college-preparatory education from it’s mainly boarding campus known as “The Circle”. The school quickly became popular amongst the American upper and upper middle classes and now boasts an alumni register that reads like a veritable who’s who of American society.
