BRYANSTON
Bryanston School was founded in 1928 as an alternative to the traditional British public school, offering a progressive educational programme whilst maintaining the charm and culture of the classic boarding school model. It is one of the better-known private schools in England and a member of the prestigious Eton Group. The school was established by a young Australian schoolmaster with the financial backing of the Earl of Shaftesbury who wished to introduce a school that borrowed heavily on the fashionable Dalton Plan approach.
ABOUT
Jeffrey Graham Jeffreys was an Australian school teacher who had moved to England in 1921 to teach at Westminster School and, subsequently, Radley College. He favoured the progressive liberal educational ethos which, at that time, was gaining traction having been introduced by a number of schools in the United States and which had not yet gained a foothold in the somewhat austere “muscular Christianity” approach of the English public schools.
He sought to establish a school of his own, wherein he could develop a model of education which borrowed from the ideas of Helen Parkhurst at The Dalton School and bundled them with the traditional public school approach. His ideas were popular with many free thinkers in high society at that time and he secured the backing of the Earl of Shaftesbury who helped finance the purchase of a grand country house owned by the Viscount Portman in Dorset.
Bryanston opened in 1928, welcoming a small class of boarding boys and has since grown in stature and size, welcoming girls and day pupils today.
The school is a popular choice for the offspring of aristocrats and military officers, attracting entrants from across the country and internationally. Despite the establishment leanings of many of the school’s current and former pupils and it’s association with various traditional public schools (it is a member of the prestigious Eton Group), the school has steadfastly maintained it’s liberal and progressive ethos. It has a particularly famed reputation for the arts with many alumni gaining prominence in such fields.
Today, Bryanston School offers an all-through education with the Knighton House preparatory school accommodating children under the age of 13 (with boarding options available from the age of 8). The school occupies extensive grounds in a beautiful part of England and accommodates a varied range of sports, academic and cultural pursuits. Indeed, the school embraces incorporating outdoor education and adventuring into it’s educational approach and, as a result, has taught a number of pupils who have gone on to become great adventurers and explorers.. It is well-regarded for it’s academic performances, embracing the International Baccalaureate, with students regularly attaining places at Oxbridge Colleges and Russell Group universities. The school has had much success too with its various sports and athletic programmes.
Bryanston is an accredited member of the Headmasters’ Conference (HMC) and the Boarding Schools Association (BSA). The preparatory school is accredited by the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS). The school is a member of the Independent Schools Council (ISC). In addition, the school is represented or is a member of a number of other professional organisations including the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students (AEGIS), the Asssociation of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools (AGBIS), the British Association of Independent Schools with International Students (BAISIS), the Independent Schools’ Bursars Association (ISBA) and The Independent Schools Christian Alliance (TISCA). Bryanston is an IB World School.
