ABOUT
Private and independent schools in the United States include a wide range of schools which are independent of the public schools system (as such they are often called non-public schools). Unlike the English (and Commonwealth) use of the term public school to refer to independent schools that are open to admissions from prospective pupils from the general public (as opposed to admissions from within the locality or from a defined demographic), public schools in the United States are those schools which are administered by the government (whether federal or state but typically at a county or district level).
